Furness Lodge

 Furness Lodge had been the home of Charles Saxby, owner of Furness Vale Printworks.  After the business became part of the Calico Printers Association, the house formed part of their estate and became a tenanted property. 

After the Saxby's, residents were Mr and Mrs Ernest Clegg (Printworks Manager) ; Mr and Mrs Dixon Davis; The Rosenbergs, and the Bellamy sisters.

Unoccupied and in poor order, the house was demolished in the 1970s.

There are few photographs of Furness Lodge and those that are known of, all show the south facing elevation. 

 We have attempted to re-create the house in this 3D computer model. As much of the detail us unrecorded much has depended upon the layout shown on the large scale Ordnance Survey Map. There appears to be a glazed extension to the left side of the house and our interpretaion of this is speculative.

The Life and Times of Furness Vale Printworks

The Life and Times of Furness Vale Printworks by Chris Bond is based upon  the scrapbooks of Mr W. A. Bradbury who was employed as a foreman for 53 years. "W. A. B." was also very much involved in public life; the District Council,  School, Chapel and the Co-op were just a few of his many duties.  He chronicled events in both the Printworks and the district around Furness Vale. This  is a unique record of  life in the village between 1794 and 1925.
This book was first published in 2012 and quickly sold out. We have only recently been able to arrange a re-print and copies are once again available from the History Society at £5. Furness Vale Printworks

Although the buildings remain, many in their original form, the Printworks is now an industrial estate. These photographs show how it once looked.

A view of the Printworks from Marsh Lane. Beyond the mill complex can be seen the cottages of Furness Row and in the background, beyond the canal and railway is Buxton Road.

This scene is little changed. This is looking down from the canal. The lake on the right.

The weir in the River Goyt. The leat or goit in the foreground supplied water to the mill lodges. This channel can still be seen on the south eastern side of Station Road but only fills with water in rainy weather.

Furness Lodge, now demolished stood between the canal and Calico Lane, where the houses of Furness Lodge Close are now situated. This had been the home of former mill owner, Mr Saxby and always remained part of the Printworks estate
